November 20, 1986 - Berkeley, CA

Show Day - Sunny/60's

Up at 10:30. We check out of the "Travel Lodge" at 12:30 and drive to "Dean Markley" (on the way we eat at "Denny's"). We pickup sticks and bass strings. Back to San Francisco to "Drum World" to buy heads and a wing nut and bolt. Then to Berkeley.

I may have mentioned before that we had a deal with Dean Markley for drum sticks and bass and guitar strings.

Load in at 5:45 - set up and sound check - cool sound. 'Soul Asylum' arrive then set up. We leave and eat. I return to fix my spare snare drum. Hang out with Grant the drummer from 'SA'. They are one of my favorite bands (can't tell them that). Hang out and then others return.

I was a big fan of Soul Asylum up until about "Clam Dip". Their major label stuff later left me cold.

'Soul Asylum' play a good set. New songs are cool. We set up and play a GREAT set. Joe breaks two strings but that's OK - Lee is great and changes strings. Play an encore - I then get drunk. I was worried that 'SA' would blow us away but we kicked butt tonight and the crowd was into it. I was happy and relieved. We pack up and drive back to San Francisco and crash at Hotel Hell - to bed at 3AM.

Soul Asylum were a very good live band. We had to be in top form to hold our own that night.
