Show Day - Sunny/Warm

Dan and Dave R. get up early 9:30 and take the van to the Ford dealer - we sleep. Get up at 10:30 and start to get cleaned up. At 11 the office calls - apparently this place has an 11AM check out time! We rush around. Dave R. left his car for us - we were to meet him at the Ford dealer. We attempt to pack it all in. Dave calls and says to wait - the van is done. We load out of the room and turn in the key. The desk was cool - we told them about the van situation.

Seems like the van is having a bit of trouble that I don't elaborate on in the diary. I remember that it was electrical in nature and that we replaced fuses often.

We wait for the van - they show up - two wires. We load up and decide to drive to "Bob Evan's". Eat, talk and get the van's oil changed. Back to Oxford and go to radio station WOXY to talk with "Mr. K". We then go to Cincinnati for a show at "Bogart's" at midnight. [I] drive with Dave R. and we talk about various people and stuff at home. We go to a record store for an "in-store" and hang out. We are drinking beer in the record store. Lots of black children are coming into the place trick-or-treating - they go to all the stores. We go and eat after. Dave, Lee and Dan load equipment into Bogart's. 'Third World' is doing a show from 8 to 11. We eat - I'm not hungry - hang out. After dinner I walk to T-Shirt store. I get in with my DM ID card and see bootleg Eat Your Paisley shirts. I hang out with some kids - the others went to the van. I wander around and stop at the van then walk some more.

I see Bogart's is managed by Clear Channel now. WOXY is great but looks like they're moving to be an Internet only station. I'm not sure why we booked a show at Bogart's the same night as Third World. I suppose we didn't want another hole in the tour.

Lee, Dave B., Joe and I go to a video and pinball arcade and play for awhile. Some guys who know us play with us. I walk some more and hang out with 2 girls who had their pictures taken with us. Talk to them and their brothers. Back to van. We find out it's 11:15 and 'Third World' haven't even gone on yet! Panic. We go in and watch them - they go on at 11:45 - OK - I didn't think they were so good. Dave B., who has said in the past how much he hates reggae, loved 'em. I go out front [of the club] - there is a big crowd for us - 300 people. I talk to a few who I had met walking around. They will be let in at 12:30AM - they can watch the end of Third World'. I go in and wait downstairs in the dressing room with the others. TW finishes. We have to wait for them to move equipment off. We set up and I decide to leave the drum riser stage left just for a change and to save time. We go on at 2AM. Everybody is tired. We play well and crowd likes the show. We play full hour - no encore. Lee sells lots of T-Shirts ands one sweat shirt. We load out. 'Low Meato' set up and play to 3 people. I felt bad for them but they played too long last evening. We say goodbye to Dave R. - we'll see him in Chicago on Sunday. Drive to hotel - to bed at 4:30AM.

I think making folks wait until 12:30 is terrible! I can't believe we went on at 2AM! Thanks to those who stuck it out.

WOXY is going internet only? they sold? wow. that is really really really sad. i never had the opportunity to ever listen to them on the radio but i do know that they are one of maybe 4 or 5 really truly "alternative" rock radio stations that were independently owned. i used to check their charts to see what they were broadcasting and then notice as it became a big hit nationwide about 4 months later once bigger stations like KROQ in LA picked up on the trends.

this is a really really sad day for radio. wow. look at their playlist, it looks like a college station! amazing! so sad to see stations like this, which were once everywhere, get snapped up and reformatted as TODAYZ HOT HITZ or whatever.

WOW! As a current staffer of WOXY/97X (I'm the assistant program director), this was a great find.

"Mr. K" still works in the Cincinnati area as well, at legendary rocker WEBN.
