Day Off - Cloudy/Warm - Joe's Birthday

Up at 10, get dressed and drive to Cirrus machine and get money. Drive to mall and drop film off - 1 hour developing. Back to the house (Lee, Dan and I). Rod and Joe are preparing to go fishing with Keith and two other guys. We pick up Dave B. As we leave they couldn't get Keith's car started (a yellow Camaro by-the-way).

We leave and go to "Denny's", eat and then to mall to pick up the film - some good shots and one roll was from last summer - the very first North American tour.

Back to Tom's store to buy Joe a tape. He doesn't have Dylan's latest. I buy the shorts I wanted and a pair of cheap sunglasses (my "Lennon" shades broke yesterday - I'll try to get them fixed). We hunt for Dave - he went to the "Beach Bazaar" - one of those tacky shops that has everything including your worst nick-knack from hell with shells on it. He actually bought shorts and Flip-Flops!

Dave almost never wore shorts or anything on his feet other than his combat boots.

Back to the house and change into shorts and then to the beach to swim and relax in the sun with the latest issue of "Spin" magazine. Cool article and interview with 'Iggy Pop'. I go back to the house and watch some of the Mets-Astros game in TV. 3-3 in the 9th - goes to 16 innings - Mets win - they're in the World Series.

We get cleaned up and drive to a studio (pick up "Wendy's" first). We're rehearsing tonight and tomorrow and record demos Friday. Cheap, small - OK. Lee and Dan drop us off and we set up. Doug the dude who owns the place is OK - he leaves us alone. Rehearsal goes pretty well. New song - "Take Me To The Specialist" is fun to play. We have to work on tempos and Dave and I work out a cool syncopated thing in "Jellyfish Heaven".

None of us (that I know of) seem to have a copy of this mysterious demo. It was recorded to send on ahead to Brian Beattie in Austin Texas so he could hear some of the new material before we arrived at the end of this tour to record "Bucky".

Dan and Lee pick us up at 10. We drive back to Tom and Crystal's. A birthday cake is waiting - Joe is 24 today. We eat cake and ice cream. We watch TV - Letterman. To bed at 2:15. We are going to try to go Jet Skiing tomorrow. I'd love to do it but I'm bushed.

All of us had birthdays on the road. One of my most memorable was six years after this when Rod and I had a club full of drunken 'Danes sing happy birthday to us during a show in Arhus Denmark - I was turning 30 and Rod 29.
