September 19, 1986 - Albany, NY

Day Off - Sunny/Cool

Woke at 11:45 - no wake up call. I shower feeling a little better today. Others rise and we watch TV. Catch most of "PeeWee's Big Adventure". We check out at 1:30 and eat at the "Tiffany Diner" across the parking lot. Drive to the laundromat. Dan, Joe and I wash while Dave R. goes to phone to make calls. Dan and I write while Joe wanders off to drug stores - back with postcards etc. Joe mends a back pack (quite well in fact). Dave back and clothes are dried. We make plans. We can't find Jenn's number. Joe remembers her last name but we decide to stay in Albany. Drive to hotel and end up staying in the same place only in the room under our one last night.

The "Tiffany was probably nothing special. Poor PeeWee...

4:30PM - I rest. Others make calls. Dan goes for a jog and Joe writes. We do "Pizza Hut" for dinner at 8:30. Back to hotel and watch movies. I drink lots of "Mott's" apple raspberry fruit juice. Play cards. Others play guitar and keyboards. Joe got batteries for his "PortaSound". Joe plays "Like A Vigin" and "Dean's Dream". We watch the beginning of PeeWee again and I end up watching the whole thing. Nothing on. I watch a cheesy R rated film on Showtime. I write this as others play cards again. Movie just ends - BAD. Decongestants are knocking me out. See you tomorrow in Binghamton.

Where'd The Cheese Go? Too bad I didn't secretly record Joe's wonderful rendition of "Like A Virgin".

People make fun of me but Pee Wee's Big Adventure is my favorite movie of all time! Serious!

We did play at least one show that I can remember with ween. In Dallas in Deep Ellum.

We were both on the bill with the "Fleshtones" from NYC. It was "Black Sambuka" promotion night and "Dean and Gene" and we all scarfed down many free shots - about 8-9 each...at least...

We all thought our sets went amazing well! The Fleshtones played last and we were merciless. I think Micky was an expert penny flicker and hit the lead singer right inthe neck...The evening ended with us all drunk and disco dancing in a black light room of the club...those guys are lots of fun.

Dan Mapp our tour manager has worked for them a few times in the last few years. Joe may talk to Micky once in a while. They do live near us in New Hope.

There was at least one Ween/Dead Milkmen show that I know about. I was at a Dead Milkmen show at Wetlands, in NYC, where Ween was an opener. It was in between Ween's first and second album, which would place at some point in 1990 or 1991. I was already a DM fan, but that's the show that got me into Ween. Sadly, the crowd of punk rock kids, didn't feel the same. Ween were booed for most of their set.

I remember that Wetlands show too, and I thought Ween were fantastic. They got a much better response at the Deep Ellum show (that was later, right before the release of Pure Guava).

We also played with Ween one other time that I remember. It was at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C. (at the original location). I think that was the first time we played with Ween. Even by then I'd seen them about a dozen times - they played out a lot locally even before their first full-length album (God Ween Satan) came out.

For all three of the shows I remember sharing bills with them they played as a two-piece (Dean & Gene) with the backing tracks (drums and bass) on a DAT tape. They did not have the full live band yet.

We all met Mickey for the first time after our first tour (for Big Lizard) when he interviewed us for his Yuck fanzine.

Also, Dave Blood and I as Ornamental Wigwam played with Ween (and a lot of other bands) at one of the WEENSTOCK shows in New Hope sometime back in the late 80s.
