Awake at 11. Sun beats through the open window onto my head. I lie sweaty and not really rested on a brown corduroy couch in Adam M's room - shit is everywhere all over the floor. I doze off until 12. Everybody up. Dave D. is quite strange - kicks us out - well not quite but he wants to go to Long Island by 12:30 or so. We shower etc. (I skip a shower - the shower in that apartment has been described as "an old woman spitting"). We leave down 5 flights of stairs. Drive to turnpike and stop to eat at the Vince Lombardi Service Center - time - 2PM.
This 5th floor walk-up in Hoboken had a shower built into an old closet right off the kitchen. The water sputtered and spit out of a small nozzle as you tried to get clean.
Drive to Middletown CT - Wesleyan University - show at the "Eclectic House" - a coed housing club/frat. Arrive at 5:30-6PM. Cool place - cool people - lots of attractive young ladies. Load in and have a beer from one of the 11 kegs to be tapped this evening. Sound system is big - room is big but very reverberant. Sound guy is an asshole. We talk him into letting us sound check. It turns out that it was useless anyway - so the asshole was right. Anyway - I hang out at the house while others go eat at a diner. I watch TV and hangout. I go over to two girls who had talked to Dave R. earlier. They're with "Subculture Zine". I introduce myself and talk to Tutti (Judy) and Marisa.
Here's a short history of "program housing" at Wesleyan including a short bit about Eclectic house. Didn't every scene have a 'zine called "Subculture"?
Band gets back and we do interview - fun. First band plays - OK - the place is jammed. We set up and play. Crowd is very enthusiastic - lots of movement. Sound sucks - I make a few mistakes - one, I lost the beat - I can't hear the guitar. Rod had to start "Hippies" three times - I couldn't distinguish "WENDELL". Noise complaints were made - Dave R. turned us down a little. We play a pretty exciting set - crowd loved it. Right before the last song a college cop got on stage to stop the show and the party. Rod stage dived into the crowd - Joe, Dave and I kept playing - fuck him [Punk rock!] what's he gonna do Rod decided? OK, lets finish and he (the cop) let us - cool. The crowd wanted more but we couldn't - show over - no beer left.
No beer always means EOP.
Hung out and talked to people. Judy and Marisa where still around and try to talk us into going to a diner. I was hungry because I hadn't eaten but we had to pack and stow our gear. In the end Rod and Dave B. go with them. Dave R., Dan and I drink beer (found some) and talk. To bed after writing this.
Posted by Dean at September 13, 1986 08:26 PMDidn't you guys have an instrumental called "Vince Lombardi Service Center"?
Posted by: timar81 at March 1, 2004 02:18 PMYes we did. It was recorded and released on Eat Your Paisley as a CD bonus track.
Inspired by the rest stop...
Posted by: Dean at March 2, 2004 12:01 AMI've been reading this here since about the time you started it and I'm curious. This is the first time you mention EOP? End Of Play?
Posted by: Jay at March 6, 2004 01:13 PMI meant "End Of Party"
