I have a diary entry for March 7. It's very long and rambling so I'll summarize it here. We drove from Memphis to Monroe starting out on I-55. For some reason I wanted to travel on Highway 61 --perhpas due to the Bob Dylan song, and the album Highway 61 Revisited. In those days I was not allowed to drive. I complained enough, though, that Dave R. relented and turned off 55 and onto 61, which was a two-lane road that wound through lots of small towns. I really did not enjoy the trip, though. Now Dave B. and Dean were upset (Rodney was asleep most of the time) and it became clear that it was going to take much longer than the interstate even though it looked shorter (to me) on a map. We eventually abandonned Highway 61 for 82 and then took 65. We arrived in Monroe at a club called Enoch's just in time to set up and play.
The show was set up by a pen-pal of mine, Ham Bell, who was an early Dead Milkmen supporter. (He sent away for our Death Rides a Pale Cow tape after it was reviewed in Maximum Rock'n'Roll. He also set up the Baton Rouge show on our first tour.) Turned out to be a pretty good show, good crowd. Since Ham did not take any cut from the door, we ended up with over $600 which I note in my diary as being a record high.
After the show, we drove to Hammond LA (an hour outside New Orleans) to stay at a Best Western.
