Show Day - [no weather report]

Up and out to Milwaukee after "Egg and I" breakfast. Arrive and load in and eat at "Century Hall" - the place we're playing at.

This online article mentions that Century Hall burned down in 1988.

Wait around. Thunders arrives late. Long shitty sound check. We check as crowd mills in. Hang out. Play a good set from about 10 to 11PM. OK crowd response. Thunders sucks. Paid $130 - shitty gig. Hotel - Dave B's ill. To bed.

I think this is the sound check where Mr. Thunders requested "More reverb in the monitors please".

the best place to eat breakfast now in minneapolis is the Triple Rock nightclub on saturday and sundays. from 10am-2pm they serve brunch in the bar. amazing amazing amazing. and, what jukebox is better than one filled with tons of old punk, johnny cash and roger miller?

Sounds good. Is the "Egg ad I" still around. I'm planning my geriatric RV tour of all the places the Milkmen ate on tour!

Oh yeah, how could I forget the Johnny Thunders No More Junkie Business experience? For the record, this burned out (and washed up at that point) hulk was not clean and sober. Hey, Johnny was one of the best walking anti-drug ads I ‘ve seen to this day. It was kinda sick to watch… amusing at times but him and his crew were a real pain in the ass. At this point in his “career” Mr. Thunders was being propped up by a group of idol worshiping lackeys that he had hired for his tour. Well, hired might not be exactly correct in all cases. When I asked (out of curiosity) the 18 year old guitarist that they had hired on to fill out the lineup, how much he was getting for the gig, he replied that he was doing it for free because it was such an honor (horror would have been more appropriate) to be in the same band as the great Johnny Thunders. Poor Kid!
As far as the clean and sober non-sense he was pitching to the rock press at the time… Well, in Milwaukee during the marathon disaster of a sound check that Thunders and his crew were doing, I found that I needed to offload a wee bit ‘o liquid. So, I headed for the restroom in the back of the joint. Right as soon as I got near the door, two or three nasty looking guys in suits with briefcases went into the Gents and locked the door behind them. No problem… I simply went into the Ladies and did my business there. When I came out, “Let’s Make a Drug Deal” was still underway. I got a chuckle out of it. Later in the evening, after we had all played our sets and the bands were hanging out in the dressing room (which Rodney decorated in his own special way) Johnny’s very English road manager sauntered in with some skanky chicks and called out, “ Johnny, you want girls?” I almost busted a nut laughing. This junkie looser probably hadn’t had the capacity to get a stiffy for years!

Hi Dean-
I was at the Century Hall show in Milwaukee and remember it fondly. I have been trying to locate any photos fom the show. It turns out that this evening would set a path for the next 15 years of my life. My husband and 2 boyfriends prior all claim to have been in the front row (as was I, but I don't remember them there). Also a late friend was in the crowd as well. So any photos of this specific show are of particular interest to me. A friend of mine to this day (also at Century Hall) by the name of Kim Draper, used to be one of Joe's pen-pals back in the day.
So sorry to hear about Dave.
Regards -Betty

Hey,
This show was my first Milkmen show. I worked for a local university's radio station and loved Bitchin Camaro, so I nabbed two tix and went to the show. I had a great time, as I took this girl who I was infatuated with. The first girl to ever break my heart (only a month later). Ahhhh, but I was so young. I remember hearing you all play Two Feet Off The Ground and I was bowled over. I still think Paisley is your best record. I picked that up the next day and I have seen you on almost every tour since in either Boston or Milwaukee.

I heard the Madison shows were better, but that's always seemed to be the case with any band that came into town. Thunders did suck - and we only stayed for two of his songs - as did most of the crowd if I remember correctly. At the time I didn't even know who he was. I was just starting off down the punk path. Ahhhhh, memories...
