Up at noon, coffee, shower, laze around. We can play in San Antonio after all - with Glass Eye's friends 'Billy Zygote and the Love Bubbles'! - At Tacoland - a Mexican biker bar. We decide to play - just to play.
Great band name. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into.
Drive down and meet Cathy and Jamie - nice girls. They take us to the "club". Unload - scary. I decide to make the best of it and order a beer. An old woman talks to me. She's very drunk and tells me dirty jokes. Ram - the bar owner introduces himself - cool guy. The crowd was at most 30-40 people all night - DRUNK OFF THEIR BUTTS!
The old woman was wearing a cowgirl outfit and is the one immortalized in the lines:
There's a girl with dirty hair
She's got her dress up in the air
She tells a lot of jokes
Hell, she's got a lot to share
She was up on the pool table at one point dancing and flipping her skirt up...
Opening band was the Tacoland punk rock band - cool songs. 'BZ and the Love Bubbles' played - Jamie on drums - cute girl. 70's covers - the greatest, funniest stuff. Macho Man, In the Navy, YMCA, Harper Valley PTA, Knock Three Times, Dancing Queen etc. We kept getting free beers - everybody was trashed. We played a great set with borrowed cowboy hats from BZ the Love Bubbles. Lotsa beer. Ram passed whiskey around. We played "Rainy Day Women" - everybody sang.
I don't remember the opening band. Hey - 'Billy Zygote and the Love Bubbles' were doing the 70's stuff before anyone - remember this is only 86! The Beer was flowing and we all had a great time. I think that we had a row of empty bottles that went across the back of the stage and across our equipment by the end of the set.
Pack up. Ram gave me the Tacoland shirt - off his back! Go to Tacocabana for Mexican food with other bands, drive home to Austin. To bed 5AM.
This would have to be on my top 10 list of shows. I still have the shirt to prove it! This night was so great it wound up being in a song:
**************
TACOLAND
There's a place
In San Antone
Where I can go
And not feel alone!
Tacoland
It's a panacea
Tacoland
They're always glad to see ya
You'll understand
When you go
On
Down to Tacoland
When I feel
My world is lost
I go to Tacoland
And I get really tossed!
I wish my band would always pla-a-ay
Tacoland, I want to sta-a-ay
You'll understand
When you go
On
Down to Tacoland
There's a girl with dirty hair
She's got her dress up in the air
She tells a lot of jokes
Hell, she's got a lot to share
Tacoland
We ate a lot of figs
They passed around a bottle
And we took a lot of swigs
It's nature's plan
To go
On
Down to Tacoland
Tacoland - Just three quarters of a mile past the Rockwood exit in beautiful downtown
San Antonio, Texas!

Actually it's here. Tell Ram and the gang the Dead Milkmen sent you! And Heavy on the Gravy!
Great entry Dean but why TacoCabana? Did they not serve food at Tacoland? Did the Milkmen ever return to Tacoland?
Posted by: Jeremy Whisenhunt at February 11, 2004 04:43 PMThanks Dean. Brought back memories. The girl was Glinda I believe. She's a trip.
To answer Jeremy's questions. No food at TacoLand. Years ago I asked Ram why the name TacoLand? He said, "Because, Toke-o Land would be too much of a knock off."
DM at TacoLand again. Would be nice. There's always May 6th.

Posted by: Clown at February 11, 2004 05:07 PMTacoland was one of my favorite shows too. While I didn't drink before or during the show (just a strange habit of mine), later in the evening Ram produced a bottle with no label. A few gulps from that more than made up for my lack of consumption earlier in the evening. Cheers, Ram!
Posted by: Blood at February 11, 2004 05:38 PMMany have fallen for the famous unlabeled bottle. I sure have.
BTW, Ram says Hi and in his usual Ramish manner says, "Tell 'em to get there asses back here."
