Up again in the same California fashion. Lazed around and out by 3 - ate at Carl Jr's again. Off to Cornhusker's. Gig with GI's. Arrived early and walked around town. 6:30 we went into the club. Played pool. Normally this is a huge heavy metal joint. Redneck's inside. Jukebox played some rude trucker songs - funny stuff. Eventually did sound check - before other bands arrived (well, as they arrived). Great sound.
Oscar's Cornhusker was in Azusa, CA and I remember it was a bit of a drive. The room was mostly a big box with a low stage on one end.
Hung out. first band started at 8:30 - add on band. One of their first gigs. We liked them - not many others did. Not many people came - it picked up later to about 150 people. Next band - "Uniform Choice" - Straight edge "Minor Threat" rip off worship band. Slick T-Shirts - not much original talent - even did cover of "Minor Threat" as an encore demand by the audience - they loved 'em.
Uniform Choice seemed pretty slick and polished for a local CA band. They definitly had a following. One of the funniest moments of the evening was after Rod found out that 'UC' were "Straight Edge". Just before we went on stage he had us all put magic marker circles on the backs of our hands. At one point in the show he announce we were playing tic-tac-toe with 'UC' and had us show our hands (straight edge folks typically put a black 'X' on their hands). Some people didn't like the joke. We all cracked up.
We're up next (11PM by now) - played a great set. Most people liked us - some a lot. Encored with "Hangin''Round". Most people got off on that. Talked to lots of people after the set. Met guys from "Ink Disease" zine. Gave us copies of rag. Will send questions for interview. Got some pix of us.
"What Am I Doing Hanging 'Round?", written by Michael Martin Murphy and covered by the Monkees was one of my favorites songs that we encored with. Here is a sample interview from Ink Disease. I don't recall if they ever followed through and interviewed us.
GI's play - boring. Crowd liked them OK. Left show. We stopped at Carl's Jr. and ate. Home about 3AM. Very tired etc. - to sleep. Last day tomorrow. I can't wait to leave this hell hole called California. The weather has been tremendous - I love that. It was nice to see Lee again. The radio station at KUCI are cool. Terry and Vince are great but everybody else has been shitty. Rick at Enigma was cool. Ron was OK - sorta. Jan - his wife was a complete fuck-up. It's definitely weird city out here. I miss Philly and my family and friends and living like a human being. Only 3 weeks to go.
After 41 days, I'm a bit crispy here. Nice to finally get to play a show and have some fun. What a drag it was being in Southern California for two weeks with no money and no shows.
