July 22, 1985 - Norman, OK

Show Day - Sunny/Hot

Out [of Kansas city, MO] by 11:30 after breakfast. 6.5 to 7 hour drive to Norman, OK. Through the Kansas Flint Hills - lots of cattle and hills - that's about it. Got to Norman at 6:30 or so. Michelle's house - 19 - nice girl - good business person. Playing at the "Jailhouse" club/bar.

You too, can check out the Geology, Geomorphology and Geohydrology of the Flint Hills. We got to stay at Michelle's house which was a nice (air conditioned!!) condo in a development with a swimming pool. I don't know if was her parent's place or what - can't remember... Her older brother seemed to be on the periphery and didn't really hang out with us. The parents were away on a trip. Her boyfriend Wayne was in this band called the Flaming Lips. He was crazy jealous of us being there - worried that we were taking 'advantage' of his girlfriend (we were not!) and was calling her on the phone constantly. I think he did stop over to the house at one point. 18 years later - I believe that she and Wayne are still together and that she's been (one of) the band's photographer(s) since 1989. Fantastic!

Hang around - go to bar. 30 people show up. Opening band are high schoolers. "B.B.E.M." Pretty bad - 2nd gig etc. We play - good 45-50 minute set. Encore etc. Got paid $74 dollars. Michelle will fill our gas tank up before we leave (hopefully).

After show we go to restaurant to eat. Back to house. I got a shower. We talk. I write and go to bed late - 3 or so. Show in Tulsa got cancelled tomorrow - SHIT!. Next shows Friday and Saturday - Denver and Boulder Colorado. Then to sunny California!!!

No I have not heard Yoshimi...but I do have all the early stuff that has been compiled and re-released by Ryko/Restless (our record label). It is a small world.

We played a show with the Lips in NYC once a few years later at a venue called "The World". I believe we met Michelle there again. I think that she and Dave R. our manager kept in touch and exchanged information from time to time.

I find it interesting that Michelle and Wayne are still together... That's so rare in musicians environment.
