July 20, 1985 - Kansas City, MO

Show Day - Sunny/Humid

Woke up late - 12:30 or so. Got cleaned up and out of house by 2PM. Joe Buffalo and his brother and sister stopped over - we went to laundry and got breakfast/lunch. Out of Des Moines by 3:15. Route 35 South to Kansas City.

Arrived at 6:15 - Keith Patterson and Eric's pad. Nice people. "Angry Red Planet" already there. Nice guys. Gave us food. Dave, Keith, Joe and I went to get beer and soda. Got hassled about our PA ID's. Ate shark steaks, salad, corn etc. Good food. Off to the hall at 9:30.

I remember this as a very nice BBQ. For some reason we were in no rush to get to the venue.

Nice hall - Foolkiller Hall. Good PA - big crowd. "Angry Red Planet" from Detroit opened. Good band - good songs - one of the best bands we've played with so far. We played about a 55 minute set. Crowd got into it - made some new fans. Sold $2-3 dollars worth of stickers - got paid $140. Nice show.

Foolkiller Hall is mentioned in passing in this detailed article about the Kansas City music scene. This page mentions the hall's demise in the fall of 1985. Angry Red Planet were from Detroit.

Back to Keith's at 1:30AM. Drank beers and watched "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!". Talked. Off to van - I slept in it again. Wrote letters. To bed about 4AM. Listened to Replacements "Let It Be" tape. Off day tomorrow.

This was the first an only time I've seen "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!". I mentioned listening to the Mats before bed. I used to have to have a tape or the radio on to help me fall asleep because of the ringing in my ears. I wasn't wearing earplugs while playing at this point. I began to wear them a few years later and recommend them to anyone who is considering a career in rock performing to use and get used to them early. Dave B. also began wearing them later on. The only downside is that if you somehow forget them and walk on stage without them to start the set - you're toast!

I once was the first shooter for an IPSC stage - I managed to walk up to the line without my ears on. Nobody noticed. The buzzer went off, I took one shot, put the pistol down, and went to get my ears.
