Woke up at 7:30-8AM. Dave R. went to Bob's Chevy to get the van fixed. $130. The rest of us wandered around in a zombie like state. Rod and I went to a corner store and bought donuts and OJ. Came back and I went with Marci and Sue into town to try to sell/pawn Marcie's TV set - no luck. Back at the house - Dave R. still not back from the car dealer. Dave B. and Joe Jack went to record stores. Rod went for film. I sat on the porch and listened to the new REM album. Eventually everybody returned. We loaded up and said goodbye - nice people.
The REM album would have been "Fables Of The Reconstruction". We meet lots of great people on the road who put us up. We wouldn't have been able to tour without the help of free floor space to stay on during our early tours. After a year or so we began to stay at cheap hotels/motels.
We went to a tire place and got the flat fixed. Ate at Rax restaurant. Not bad food. I drove to Indianapolis - 4 hours. Got gas, got food at Hardee's. Dave R. made a few calls. Drove to Chicago - arrived at 10PM. Went to Dave B's friend Shelia's apartment. She was not at home.
I probably wouldn't be caught within 5 miles of a Rax restaurant now. Which came first - the food or the gas?
I stuck with the van while the rest of the guys did some calling. Rod came back and decided to try the door bell for the hell of it. Turned out her room mate was home and not very happy to see us. Yelled at Rod and slammed the door in his face. We called Cole and made arrangements to stay with him. Everybody back at van. Room mate came out an apologized but we didn't stay. She's not a very nice person.
Cole was a friend of Colin's from Fever records.
Went to Cole's place. Dave B. went to sleep. The rest of us went to White Castle for some "Slyders" (small greasy hamburgers). Really bad. Home to Cole's - to bed about 2AM.
For some reason Cole decided it would be good fun to take us to a White Castle retauraunt on the South Side of Chicago at midnight. Go figure.
Posted by Dean at July 2, 1985 03:00 PMthank you for posting your tour journal, it's terribly interesting! what a cool look into one of my favorite bands on (i assume) your first tour outside of the area. I will definitly be keeping up with this blog and list it on my site...
Posted by: Sean LaFianza at December 4, 2003 04:00 PMHey, back in those days there was hardly anything open serving food at the hour of the night besides some pretty awful local diners. And they're "sliders".
