If you're seeing the Dead Milkmen next week, please note that because it'll be a memorial show, it'll be quite different than their normal set

It's probably going to be more like this show here:

Sorry, I was meaning to post about this. Please come to the show, but we're trying to avoid things that might not be in the best of taste at a memorial show, such as people shouting for songs, stage-diving, etc. The show will be a little shorter & a little tamer than our average set. That said, it will still, hopefully, be pretty good, as would befit Dan's memory.

Thanks

Thanks, Chris and Rodney.
Dan and I were pretty close from our teenage years until a couple of years ago, when he started getting into heroin. The common bond we had when we met was our mutual love of The Dead Milkmen.
Unfortunately, Dan lost his battle with addiction in April. All proceeds from the show on Friday are going to a drug treatment/recovery program in which Dan had started to get involved before his death.

Dan and my cousin Woods were best friends. Some of you might remember my first band, Farquar Muckenfuss (I played bass, Woods played guitar, and his brother Tim played drums). Dan was our first AND most fervent fan & supporter from the beginning until we stopped playing five years later. He was at our first show and he was at out last show (and most of them in between). We did a few little tours with Dan on board, and he eventually even became a fantastic singer/songwriter (his act was called "The Great Northern" - also on the bill Friday [Dan's brother Ben will be singing in his place]). Farquar hasn't played in 12 years, but we are playing this show for Dan.

Dan played in an awesome Philly band called "Women." If you attended the Johnny Brenda's "Les Enfants du Prague" show in October of '08, then you saw Dan's band as one of the opening acts. Playing a show with the Milkmen was one of Dan's proudest moments; he talked about it often. Almost every year since I met him he put on a show on his birthday (July 28th). Joe Jack even played one of them a few years back - great times! Unfortunately we weren't able to get the show on the 28th this year, but maybe it's kind of appropriate seeing as Dan isn't with us anymore (trust me - he would have done a much better job organizing this show....no offense to those who did though).

As Rodney and Chris mentioned - this will be a different kind of show. It's a musical celebration of a kind and gentle soul's life, whose number one passion was music.

Thanks for reading and I hope to see some of you there (right, Mang?!?)

-Dandrew

I took the day off from work. I'll be there.

Oddly enough, I found a 1" Women pin from the Johnny Brenda's show, yesterday while cleaning my apartment.

Sanchez, why are you always so very overbooked? What's the other show? Ask yourself: is it more important than this benefit show, which also happens to be hosting some kickass bands, one of which happens to be TDM? I expect to see you there. I just might have an extra ticket too, pending my girlfriend's availability (she is doing her own noble volunteer work this week, which is important too!) so really there is little reason not to come. I'm glad we had this conversation.

i'm always overbooked cause i listen to too much awesome music and i go into a serious depression if a band i love is in town and i don't go.
the other show is anthrax, MOTORHEAD, and slayer and i've already purchased $45 tix. i'll skip slayer if i have to (although this is a major violation on my part) but i will be seeing motorhead on friday for sure. if i can find a late show after the milkmen i'll go to that too. rock rock rock!!!

I can't argue with that. But please don't get your face busted again. I'll bring paper towels just in case.

fun show the other night. i thought it was pretty close to the typical set, maybe even better.
the kid on the side of the stage was cool (hope he was wearing ear plugs tho) BUT... there was a woman there with a kid that looked to be less than a year old. WTF?!? it was pretty awkward/distracting seeking a baby at a loud concert, 6 feet from a mosh pit.

Dude, where were you? I was there the whole time, although all over the place. I saw a lady with an infant but it (he, she I don't know - infants all look very similar at rock concerts) was wearing headphones. Hey, Dandrew's kids were there too, but they're pretty rock 'n roll as it is. His oldest said at one point, "I'm going back to the green room."

Evening's highlights (as I see it):

- The opening number to the Milkmen set: entirely unplugged, Dean on guitar, crowd sing-a-long.
- Life Is Shit/Living Life (Daniel Johnston)/Life Is Shit medley.
- The entire Farquar Muckenfuss set and seeing Dan looking notably (and appropriately) crazed. FM = untouchable energy and entertainment
- Learning that Rodney sucks at memorial shows.
- Lifting Rodney's amp (oh wait, that sucks)
- Moron, I Hear Your Name, Serrated Edge, et al.
- Eating sandwiches

Unfortunately my recorder failed on me just before their set. (turned out to be an issue with the micro SD card, as we later figured out) But I did manage to record the set by Farquar Muckenfuss (Dan's other band) that night along with Joe's solo show the next night. I'm good for something at least.

Aww, that's a shame that you didn't get the DM set, but at least you were able to document the Farquar Muckenfuss show, as it was their first in years, and it's always good to get a Joe show.

Did anyone else have a chance to tape the Milkmen set? I swear, we need to invest in a setup for Mang to take along with him, as he tends to see most of the DM's shows that they play. Man, if only I had the money and time to travel like that, I'd love to be able to film all these great shows!
