I listened to the full album a few times this week. All in all it's a decent album, 'Space & Time', 'Resolution', 'Control', 'Streamline', & 'Nova' are great VNV tunes.
The rest..eh... somewhat predictable. The big disappointment for me is no real powerful or interesting instrumentals like 'Electronaut', 'Interceptor', etc... 'On Air', 'Goodbye 20th Century', and 'Photon' are boring.
That being said, most VNV albums blow anything Depeche Mode has done in the last 17 years off the map, and 'Automatic' is no exception. Plus Ronan and Mark are just cool guys.
Looking forward to seeing them live in November when they play in Phoenix. |

I have to say that (and please note that I'm only on my second or third listen) I'm much more impressed than I expected to be. The choice of synths is impressive (they've nailed the whole "Future-Retro" concept) and it was worth the price of the CD alone just for "Space & Time" (Then again, I thought that Faith, Power & Glory was worth the investment just for "Art of Conflict). All-in-all, I think this is going to be one of those game-changing CD's for a lot of us. Only two months to go until they play Philly.
PS. Although it's catchy as Hell, "Control" was included so that the CD could generate at least one club it. Screw it; these two gave us "Illusion"*, so I'm willing to forgive 'em for just about anything.
* And the synth on Caitlin Childs |

Well Rodney, I would love to give you a review of VNV's show this Friday, but they postponed the LA and Phoenix shows because they didn't get their visas on time.
Never ceases to amaze me how these foreign bands continually screw up work visas, I can't tell you how many times I've seen bands cancel because of this reason.
The good news is they at least rescheduled for March. |
