Rodney,
Inquiring minds want to know. Tell us about your dinner with Mrs. Palmer and Mr. Gaimon. Wow. Give us a peek through the keyhole.
I hope you didn't use the dessert fork for your salad. I know nothing pisses off Amanda more than bad table manners.
Kidding aside, I am curious about your take on the West coast tour and this summit of creative minds.

I've actually been getting asked this by quite a few people. First a little backstory: Amanda Palmer was probably the 2nd or third person I followed on Twitter. Most people who enjoy the Milkmen know I'm a huge fan of her work in the Dresden Dolls and her solo stuff [http://www.deadmilkmen.com/dmffa/viewtopic.php?p=58827&sid=13d5fd927e0c3775d51e6c54d830d819] and many of those folks also know that I am equally as big a fan of Amanda's husband Neil Gaiman ("Sandman" being the only graphic novel I've ever read...plus, there's "The Dr.'s Wife"...).
So, when Amanda started tweeting about Neil's commencement speech at the University of the Arts on Broad Street, I started sending tweets inviting both of them to dinner, in pretty much the same way you might send tweets inviting the Queen & Prince Philip to dinner. I figured that they'd have no idea who I was. Also, I didn't direct the tweets to them, so I didn't ever expect them to see the actual invites. And then two strange things happened...
It turns out the Kyle Cassidy [http://www.kylecassidy.com/] who is a friend of Vienna & me, is working on the photo book which will accompany Amanda's new CD. It also turns out that - and this still blows my mind - both Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione are Dead Milkmen fans. Amanda even recently covered the Guitar Song. So, I received a tweet from Amanda reading "Rodney, let's meet; let's eat" and I fell out of my chair.
As for dinner, well, since there was also our friend Kyle, Vienna, a woman with 11 cats, and Kyle's friend Brad the Archeologist (I want to be this guy! Seriously!) who teaches, among other things, a "History of Money" class present, the topics discussed ranged from the book "Freakonomics" to Nudity to Nick Cave to the budget of the BBC to Amanda's attack on the music business via kickstarter.
So, to sum up, it was a lovely dinner and Amanda & Neil are every bit as smart, funny and sweet as you would hope. You're not upposed to meet your heroes, but I'm glad I did.
Now, does anyone have Nick Cave's phone number? |

| That is fantastic. Thanks. My wife and I remember Amanda doing her performance art as a silver statute of liberty/wedding gowned giant in Harvard Square. That must have been prior to the Dresden Dolls. She would move so slowly as to be almost imperceptible. Transfixing and also terrifying for some reason that I can't explain. |

I wish, I just recently got into Mr. Cave. I find myself singing Straight to You to myself just about everyday... What a powerful song and musician. _________________ "Do you know what it's like to be violated by a 300-pound Filipino skinhead named Gunther? It ain't no picnic!" |

Shit Luther, I would've gladly settled for just a hug!
Now read this: http://blog.amandapalmer.net/post/23551030051/where-all-this-kickstarter-money-is-going-by-amanda
Amanda's Kickstarter campaign (along with campaigns by Caustic, Android Lust, and MC Lars*) have totally reversed my opinion of crowd sourcing - which used to be "You want money? Take an extra fuckin' shift at Burger King, you trust fund twerp."
The truth is the that the what few record companies that are left (Including good ones like Metropolis) just don't have the cash to help their artists with touring and recording. They can handle distribution, but not much else. Which has forced musicians to seek out new ways to be practically broke, as opposed to the old way which was getting an advance and then owing the record company money for the rest of your natural life.
Now, the reason I like this new paradigm is because there are many "artists" I fucking loathe, some artists I like, and a few artists I love. Most of the "artists" I despise don't need Kickstarter because they're popular with a large numbers of idiots. You don't need to offer idiots any extra incentive to buy your music because...well... they're fuckin' idiots!. They've read about these musicians on Pitchfork or seen 'em on TV, quid ergo, they will see them in concert and buy their music no matter what.
As for bands I like. Well, I may or may not contribute to their Kickstarter fund depending on how much I like them. If I like them a little, I'll pledge $10 for a CD. If I like them a lot, it'll be a pledge of $20 for a Cd and some exclusive downloads.
Bands I love can expect me to rob me blind and then fuck me on the steps of the Vatican to the tune of "666 on My Crucifix". $100 for a CD and Shikkee's pocket lint? Count me the fuck in! Why? Because I'm a fan. If I love your music, I want something extra. Something a casual fan may not have (Ask me, sometime, about what Angelspit goodies I own). And if you start phoning it in, I won't be making those $100 pledges anymore.
And if you ask me, $5000 to have Amanda Palmer play a concert in your house is a fuckin bargain. Shit Luther, I would've gladly paid her $5000 for just a hug!
* I could've been much more help to Lars with his Kickstarter campaign had I known what I know now. |
