Here's us covering the Monkees in 1986.

A bit rough but fun:

RIP Davy Jones

Awesome. My wife is a Monkees fan. She was really bummed yesterday.

She has pretty much everything they ever did, including the later stuff after the show ended.

This is one of my favorites:

It's definitely not the type of song expected from the Monkees. The music still sounds like pop music of the era, but the lyrics are quite shocking considering the source.

Davy was the youngest and most health conscious of them. Mickey was on an interview, and said that Davy's father died at an early age from heart attack as well, so maybe genetics played a part. I don't know.

RIP Davy. The world has lost of of the greatest Tambourine and Maraca players that ever lived.

No Davy in this one, but I found it unusual and kind of a moment of Zen:

John Lennon, Anne Murray, Harry Nilsson, Alice Cooper, and Mickey Dolenz hanging out at the Troubadour.

What's absolutely amazing about the Monkees (other than Mike punching a hole in a wall and then turning to an industry bozo and saying "That could've been your face"*) is how fresh then sound after all these years.

Here's my favorite Monkees song (yes, it prominently features a synth), Daily Nightly:

Before there was Icon of Coil, there was The Monkees!

Now, check this out. Here's Davy singing Valleri:

How cool is that song? Well, you know Valerie Gentile from Angelspit/Cruxshadows/Black Tape for a Blue Girl? Her mother named her after that song!

And as much as I love "Daydream Believer" [TAKE 7A!], Davy's best song is "She Hangs Out":

Yes, that's Jerry Blavat - The Geator with The Heator - in that clip!

The Monkees are so cool that even Run MDC sampled them:

Here are the Pistols doing "Not Your Stepping Stone":

Did you know that "Last train to Clarksville" is an anti-war song? It goddamn is! "And I don't know if I'm ever coming home" refers to the protagonist going off to war.

OK, let's cleanse our palettes before we have one last Monkees video for desert:

(yeah, the dog just puts that over the top)

Just try to get this song out of your head - SHE!:

*Yes, that really happened.

The synth used in that was a Moog syth. Mickey owned the third one made if I'm not mistaken.

Love the guitar in "Vallarie".

Also, Jack Nicholson was a co-writer of "Head"

Hola Dean,

I have (on cassette) a show that you guys did in Scranton, PA. It was probably around the same timeframe. The DM covered the Monkees as well as a medley that included Madonna, the Doors and the Grateful Dead. I scanned the artwork and the setlist to my computer but am unable to post it here. Give me an email address to send it to so you can upload it.

Go America!
