DVD Commentary Track Recording Session Photos

I’ve added a few photos to the site from the DVD commentary recording session we did in the summer of 2003. This was the first time in many years that all of us were in the same room at one time. It was a great afternoon and we had fun talking and joking around. These photos also probably represent some of the last photos of Dave Blood.

the dead milkmen are one of the greatest bands ever, the day after i heard about the tragedy of dave blood i walked off my bus to school walked to the flag and wound it down to half staff. it didnt lighten the load of losing a member of a band that i look up to and one of the reasons i picked up playing guitar, but it felt good to do. i hope to see you boys possibly into some new material for dead milkmen??
if not, then what a beautiful thing it has been as of now.

I just think it’s beautiful that a band broke up without any bitterness or animosity in it’s heart, like the Beatles. I have been a DM fan for only a little over a year, but more than once, the music has made an otherwise nightmarishly boring work day feel bearable. These pictures only prove that there was always an openly affable bond that is always near-impossible in a band, post-breakup.

I’ve been a fan for about a decade and a half.Condolences for your loss :( Im planning on looking at the photos after I tell you about a pill that will enlarge your penis by THREE INCHES! ;P
Ahem,
I just want you folks to know that to my highschool circle of friends you were “our band”.In fact one of my friends too the song “drinking bleach” seriously and showed up to school with a really fked up voice. It came back after a couple of weeks.Looking back on those days (Im turning 30 july 13) brings back great memories that make me laugh out loud to this day.
We sniffed glue, went to parties and constantly complained how lame they were when they wernt.
had danceateria kids listen to “youll dance to anything” and did just that at the beginning of the song.
Ryan, Jim,my brother Mike, and I started a gang called the Pyro Paper Clip Club.To get in you had to chuck a paper clip at a teacher in class or light a decent sized fire with whatever we could find in our parents garage.Twentysomething people joined over a year or so period.
Worshiped a cricified Curious George.
Tom would just ramble off the entire lyrics of “what the Qweers are doing to the soil” at the strangest times.
Tried extremely hard to like Soul Rotation.I still hate that album.Jerks…..;P
Well there is a lot more memories and details witch I wont get into..I guess what Im tring to get at was that your music was a terrible influence.
if i could go back i wouldnt change a thing :)
Credits…..(what happened to us)
Tom became a drug dealer and got busted with like two pounds of pot in his trunk by the cops in Brooklyn Park MN(where we grew up).His Republican Dad bailed Him out and helped him build a house in AZ.I havent talked to him in about ten years.
Jim is a ex meth addict and a capenter now trying to make a honest living as far as I know. Its been about ten years since Ive seen him.
My Brother Mike Is a drug free 28 year old working with kids that have disabillities.
Ryan committed suicide about two years ago.Nobody really knows why, personally i Think because he was gay ;).And had a problem comming out (seriously).Everytime I hear “life is shit” I think of him.Man he was a great guy :)
I went to college got a degree in accounting. Then found out I hate accounting.I went back to my old job working in security.Im happily married, have a step-son,and living in a townhome located in the Twin Cities.
well that burned away 20 mins of work.Love the blog settup thanks Webmasta~!

Isn’t that skateboard shirt Dean’s wearing the same exactl one he wore on night two of the reunions shows back in November, and if so I am a freaken jacknard for knowing and remembering that.
July 10th, 2005 at 10:31 pm
sigh* i am sad that the milkmen will never be the milkmen again. even though the vocals were usually atonal (in a good way…lol), dave and joe’s melodic sense was a big influence on me as a musician. but i am glad that i was able to make it to one of the two memorial shows. having never seen the milkmen when they were together, this was the next best thing and it was great to be there to help everyone celebrate something so beautiful. i am a certified music JUNKIE, and the milkmen are a big part of the memories i have growing up. thanks for the joy, guys.

That session was loaded with Dean talking.
(and then getting interrupted by Rodney)

I think the commentary was the coolest part of the DVD. Especially the commentary for Secret of Life…Coocoo for Cocoa Cox…damn, that was funny! Rodney has to be the funniest guy ever in punk rock.

I’ve been a milkmen fan for about three years and i have nothing important to say. Just wanted to leave a comment for milkmen history. I think it is really cool how down to earth the milkmen are i once recieved an e-mail from joe jack

I remember being an angsty 16 year-old when you guys put out Punk Rock Girl. I believe your music was instrumental in driving my life in the direction that it has. It opened me up to humor and fun and got me out of my teenage drama. Mostly, I remember being completely in love with the whole band and wanting to marry all of you (in Utah, no doubt!) and have your babies. I had the pleasure of meeting you in Orlando in 1986 or 87 and getting your autographs. I think I still have them around some where. I also remember giving Rodney a picture of Manson and drilling Jasper about his personal life. I guess you can only get away with being so forward when you’re young. Anyways….I still put the D.M. shows at the top of the list of my all-time favorite shows ever! Thanks guys!

Ahhh. I remember when I was a nostalgic punk. Good times. Good times.

November 12th, 2005 at 12:29 am
oh yeah and i got the dvd ” philadelphia in love “. got it on south street in the 2 floor tower records. 15 bucks … pretty descent. and i think the thing that only eats hippies and big time operator are the best videos ever.

Things I recall:
Buying Motley Crue and Def Leppard t-shirts and playing video games. Then came that day in ‘86 when I bought Big Lizard on LP. My mom said, “Well, as long as it keeps you away from W.A.S.P.”
Putting the Dead Milkmen records IN FRONT of the Dead Kennedys records at the store. Putting punk albums out of alphabetical order was fun and very PUNK. The guy at the record store said once he hated me.
Eating chinese take-out, listening to “Bucky Fellini” at nite driving ’round with my friends at 16 and shooting splatballs up at seedy motel windows. Later finding naughty pix in a motel parking lot and putting them up in our lockers at skool.
Playin’ “Plum Dumb” and “Dean’s Dream” for our first curtain call while in my first band.
Buying and wearing a paisley shirt just because Dave Blood wore one.
Mom finding my math folder with “Sri Lanka Sex Hotel” inscribed on the cover. “Is this someplace you go that you don’t tell me about?” she asked.
Freshman college Milkmen concert in Columbus, Ohio in ‘90 with Cavedogs (…) and Mojo Nixon. Before the show playing Bingo with the Milkmen at a bar next door. (Huh???)
In the middle of my “Dylan folk phase” taking the time (and money) out to buy “Soul Roatation” and later slam-dancing solo to the “Conspiracy Song”.
Comin’ back to mom and dad’s after four years away in NYC and listening to Lizard, Paisley, Fellini, Beelzebubba, Banana Peels, Metaphysical, and Soul in one all-nite nostalgia session (and realizing in the morning I was no longer able to pull off even a sober “all-niter”)
Hearing of Dave Blood’s death through a website by pure chance. Some things you can never prepare for, they simply pounce upon you at your most vulnerable.
Coming to this website and thinking, “should I write something?”. One part of me saying, “no–” and the other saying “yes–” after perusing the photo up above.
Why?
Life is shit, but then again, what makes all those beautiful flowers in the world grow so well in the first place???

I have bin listening to The Dead Milkmen since you guys started up. You guys blew away anything els around and seemed like the vioce for our generation (sarcastic assholes). I couldnt even begin to count the times ive taken acid and poped on a DM album/casset or did a wippit at the end of the countdown on rocket ship. You guys are the soundtrack to my life. Obscure refrences to Ricky Kasso and parinoid rantings like Stuart helped shape my sick sence of humor and sarcastic outlook on life. I think songs like Plumb dumb and Deans dream are just as phycadelic and melodic as anything Pink Floyd has ever done. And Stuart and Life is shit are funyer then anything weird al could ever dream up. You guys are the greatest band ever hands down. I hear your influence in tons of music from Ween to mc chris and any band thats any good, even the great Dave Yow likes DM. Talk about brown nozein 8) thank you guys for helping to shape my life with your wonderfull music.

The Dead Milkmen are one of the greatest bands ever. Right before Dave died, I really got into you guys, and I kept thinking, “Well… maybe they’ll get back togeather! Who knows!” Then Dave died and my hopes were crushed. But still. incredibly awesome band.
February 27th, 2006 at 6:50 pm
Have been listening for a long time now, since late 80’s, and your music still hands down is better than 99.9% of current music. I remember one of your concerts from the early 90s in Tampa, FL, only about 40 people in the audience but still the same Dead Milkmen. Dave will be missed by all of us but never forgotten.
March 10th, 2006 at 10:11 pm
Been a huge fan since I saw one of your videos on”Bomb Shelter Videos” hosted by Bill Board ( some Seattle late night cable show). Lately I’ve got “Eat Your Paisley” playing in my truck for the last month. It takes the edge off while driving in traffic. Still looking for my Sole Rotation…damn. I really miss you guys! Still can’t believe Dave’s gone. At least, for all who knew him personally, the love and laughter still remains………….
March 28th, 2006 at 5:44 pm
oh man. all i have to say is, keep rocking whatever it is you guys have moved on to.

i have been a fan since the first album big lizard, the commotion over bitchin camaro was the big one on the scene but if you looked deeper the lyrical content, charles nelson riley, deans dream argue n fight n one pulls a knife he hits me in the head but im alright!!!!wow!!!!i was like 19 at the time and this band had real personality.the break in the action from all of the hardcore bands, fear, circle jerks, descendents, black flag,d.i.,social distortion and then heres this band out of philly singing about nitro burnin funny cars.i have listened to this band from day 1 and truly loved the lps, cds, tapes and the live shows, whether in hallendale beach florida or providence rhode island the show was always fun, everyone loved the monkey, junky and the honkey even the rough neck skinheads wich is were i fit in,got right into it without feelin like a jerk off.ill never forget there version of astro zombies live.upon the soul rotation years when people were getting negative on the band saying…”too serious”..i just have one thing to say to that ..wonderfully colored plastic wartoys…they got better,i mean can you imagine shaft in greenland???thats too cool for even shaft himself.and with every tour there was a target whether it was debbie gibson, new kids, someone was getting a verbal spankin at there expense.
i just got the dvd of philidelphia with love and it gave me the chills of how these guys made me feel good.i will treasure it and hope we get more footage live or interview, behind the music who cares just more !!!!!dave blood will be missed.i dont know if they will ever go on without him but i would be first in line if they did.
i can honestly say i love this band and for those who understand them they have made at least my life just a little better.
May 12th, 2006 at 9:56 pm
I don’t know who from the band might be reading this, but I have to thank you. I have been listening to your music consistently since about ‘93 or 4 when someone let me borrow metaphysical graffiti. I was just starting to recover from years of alcoholism at that time and your music was extremely uplifting. I drove from Morro Bay CA to Utah about six times round trip and listened to nothing but your tapes (I had all of them available at this time, wont bore you by listing them all). I always had a smile on my face and it is impossible to feel unhappy while listening to you. I love the meaning of life video from the phili in love dvd and of course punk rock girl. I also love the song six days and many others. I bought two of your t shirts and can’t wait to get my not richard but dick shirt. I love the song not crazy from that album. anyway, any time anyone asks me what my favorite group is I say the dead milkmen and am constantly telling people to check you guys out. Your music has meant a lot to me in my life and I am so happy that you guys made the music you did. You are my favorite people in the world. I was very sad to hear about dave. And I was sad when I bought stoney’s extra stout in college and the word was that that was going to be your last album. Thank you for making this website. I have been watching the vids and listening to the links - including joe talcom’s site - for the past few hours. I never saw you live, but just missed you when you came to san luis obispo to a record shop in the 90’s by 1 day. I was sick over it. I LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU

Its hard to believe that 20 years has passed, I still have 3 of your cds in my car pack. I miss the new stuff and the concerts - I hope Dave is still laughing up there………… Blessings to you all………

It was 85 when I first listened to you guys. I remember skating the halfpipe and listening to you guys for hours. I was 13 or so then and bought my first DM album shortly thereafter. You guys were the best and it pains me to hear of Dave’s Tragedy.
Just remember, you still have a mass following and people who respect the music you played.

I have been a fan from day one. And I still like punk , have long hair, died purple and shaved into a Mohawk. I am also a fairly successful Computer Programmer, let us just say I do fairly well for myself. DM was always fun, still tops along with Misfits and The Cure in my book.
Moral of the story is this, just because you are nuts and love having fun, does not mean you have to be a drug addict, or an inmate. Dead Milkmen littered my folders and books even in college, but that did not keep me from having fun, getting a 4.0 or living life.
Whatever you do, do it well, and DM did it well.
